Whether you have blonde, brunette, black, red or multi-coloured hair, colour treated hair needs a little extra attention if you want the colour to last.
Getting your hair colour looking its best, is our job. Keeping the colour bright and not letting it fade is yours. Don’t worry, we are here to help, and here are our tips for keeping coloured hair in tip-top condition.
1. Wait before shampooing
When you have your hair coloured, the cuticle layer is opened, making it easy for the colour to penetrate the hair shaft. If you wash your hair too soon after you visit the salon, the colour could be rinsed away. It is recommended that you wait 72 hours before shampooing, which will help your colour last longer between salon visits.
2. Use the right shampoo and conditioner
You spend your hard-earned cash colouring your hair, so make sure you use the right shampoo and conditioner to make it last. We recommend using sulphate-free and paraben-free products, so it doesn’t strip the hair of its natural oils, moisture and of course the colour. In the salon, we use IQ Haircare. Depending on your hair type, condition and the colour your hairstylist can recommend the right product for you. Plus, they start at a very affordable, £8.50 a bottle.
3. Turn down the water temperature when shampooing
We know that hot showers feel great, so we’re not saying to blast yourself with ice-cold water. Again, hot water opens your hairs cuticles, so try shampooing your hair with lukewarm water. If you can brave it, rinse your conditioner with cold water to help seal in the moisture and prevent colour fade.
4. Wash your hair less often
During the lockdown, many of us managed to wash our hair less often, and it did wonders for our hair condition. Not only are you washing away natural oils that moisturise and keep your hair colour looking fresh, but you also wash away a little bit of dye every time you wash your hair. There are great dry shampoos to use on those in-between days, including colour tinted ones.
5. Add on an Olaplex treatment
Olaplex’s hair treatments are well known for their ability to work miracles on damaged or coloured hair. It strengthens and moisturises hair, as well as speeding up blow-dry times. This results in hair feeling smooth and silky. You can add the Olaplex treatment during your appointment at the salon for £10. Products can also be purchased to continue treating your hair at home.
6. Use leave-in treatments to protect when styling
Coloured and chemically treated hair needs extra hydration and protection to prevent damage. Leave-in treatments will help you keep your hair smooth, and one with UV protection will help stop the sun fading your hair. It’s a 10 miracle leave-in product is one we highly recommend.
7. Avoid using hot tools
The heat will strip away colour. To help maintain your colour, use a heat protectant spray before blow-drying or using your straighteners or curling styler. If you can, avoid using these every day.
8. Avoid chlorine
Now that gyms and swimming pools are now back open, many of us are back in the water. Chlorine is a chemical bleaching agent that cleans pools, and unfortunately, it also strips colour from your hair. Blonde hair could get a green tint, whilst darker shades may become dull. We know it’s not sexy, but get yourself a swim cap if you like to swim regularly.
